Fridge not cooling? What to check first

If the fridge feels warm, first work out whether the fridge compartment, freezer or both are affected. A few observations can make it easier to describe the fault and decide what to ask about when booking.

01 / First checks

What to note when the fridge stops cooling

Identify the warm compartment

Compare the fridge and freezer compartments. Note whether the change affects the whole fridge or just one shelf, drawer or side, and which area changed first.

Note the setting and any warning

If the display shows a set temperature and a separate current reading, write both down. Photograph an error code if one appears. On units with a dial, note its position and whether it was recently changed.

Look at the door seal

Check whether a container, shelf or drawer is keeping the door from closing fully. Note any loose section of the rubber seal, visible gap or moisture around the door edge.

Look for covered air vents

If your model has visible air vents inside the fridge, check whether food or containers are pressed against them. The owner’s manual can help identify the vents for your model.

02 / Cooling patterns

Is the freezer still cold?

Describe what changed in each compartment and when. The pattern helps a technician decide where to start.

Fridge warm, freezer still cold

On models that circulate air between compartments, the fridge section may warm up if its air path is blocked. Note the shelf affected and whether the freezer is still holding temperature.

Fridge and freezer both warming

Note when you first noticed the change, whether the display is active and whether the unit sounds different. If the change followed a move, power interruption or restock, mention it when you enquire.

Cooling changes throughout the day

Write down when it happens and whether it follows repeated door openings, restocking or a period with the doors closed. A short record helps describe a fault that comes and goes.
